Frequently Asked Questions

No! Vermont is a direct-access state for physical therapy, meaning you can schedule and begin treatment immediately without a doctor’s referral. For Lifestyle Medicine services, a referral is never required.
-
We will use a website/app called Jane to have secure, HIPAA-compliant video conferences. Both the evaluation and treatment take place in your home. Since this is a virtual practice, treatments will be focused on education, home exercise plans, and lifestyle changes (rather than manual therapy, electrical stimulation, heat/ice, etc).

It depends.
Physical Therapy sessions are typically eligible expenses for both Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
Lifestyle Medicine sessions can be eligible if they are being used as active treatment or prevention of a diagnosed medical condition (like obesity, hypertension, diabetes) rather than for general wellness. You might need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from your doctor, to verify with your specific plan’s administrator, or to pay out of pocket and be reimbursed by your plan after showing an LMN and superbill.

While manual therapy can be incredibly beneficial (especially for short-term pain regulation), long-term healing comes from movement modifications, education, and appropriate tissue loading. All of these treatments can be done virtually!

Part of our training as Doctors of Physical Therapy is to screen for “red flags”. These are signs/symptoms that tell us your condition is more severe and needs further evaluation. Whether I am seeing a patient in person or virtually, I screen for red flags. If I do not find you appropriate for physical therapy, I will refer you out to the appropriate medical provider or emergency services.

No, most physical therapy equipment can be replaced with items found in your home. Click here to see some easy swaps. If we decide later on that you would benefit from specific equipment, we can discuss what to get and where to get it during a session.

Physical Therapy will focus on treating a specific medical condition, injury, or pain (and is restricted by state licenses). Lifestyle Medicine is health coaching focused on the 6 pillars of Lifestyle Medicine (and can be done globally).
-
You can use the Jane app or website for your appointment. This can be done on a phone, tablet, laptop or desktop. Click here for more helpful tips on how to prepare for a telehealth session.

You may see me for Lifestyle Medicine treatments, but not for physical therapy at this time. I am planning to become licensed in other states at a later date.

Different tissues in our bodies require different amounts of time to heal. Muscles can heal anywhere between a few days to 6 months. Tendons usually require more time, from 3 weeks to 6 months. Ligaments can be anywhere from a week to 12+months. Bones can be 1 month to 3 months. That doesn’t mean you have to come to PT 3x/week for 3 months. Because I provide longer 1-on-1 sessions, most patients are appropriate for visits 1x/week or 1x/2 weeks depending on where they are in their treatment plan.
Lifestyle changes also take time. It could take 3 months to work on specific nutritional changes. This could look like an initial lifestyle medicine session on week 1. A 45 minute follow-up 1x/week on week 2-4. Then 30 minute follow-ups 1x/2 weeks for weeks 6-12. For this scenario, you would have 8 sessions total.
